Innovation finalists announced Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 May 2009 14:48
Trade Minister Lord Davies of Abersoch has announced the finalists for the 2009 Building Exchange (BEX) Innovation Competition, which recognises the most innovative UK firms in construction and infrastructure.

The finalists are Camden Group of Antrim, Nu-Phalt of Rugby, PhotonStar LED of Southampton, Primace Associates of Cirencester and Screedrail Solutions of Stone, Staffordshire.
Camden Group’s Firefly is designed to break double-glazed windows in the event of a fire, allowing any window of the correct size to become an escape window and helping energy-efficient glazing units conform to safety requirements and building regulations.
Nu-Phalt has created a low-emission infrared asphalt repair system, which is cleaner, faster, longer-lasting and more cost-effective than traditional methods of pothole repair.
PhotonStar LED designs and manufactures a range of LED lighting products, including products developed to offer improved energy efficiency and product lifetime and to  simulate the daylight changes that influence human performance and behaviour.
Primace Associates’ Karapace is a rapidly transportable walling system manufactured from reinforced precast concrete. Suitable applications include creating retaining walls, pipeline protection, blast walls or walls to protect against flooding or terrorist attack.
Screedrail Solutions’ Metalscreed range of products reduces the materials required for the construction of concrete floors while improving performance and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Announcing the finalists Lord Davies said: “While innovation in the field of sustainable and intelligent construction is reshaping the industry, market conditions are currently tough. It is therefore particularly important that UK companies’ wealth of expertise in developing new products, services and technologies is recognised on a global platform.
“I congratulate the five finalists, and I am pleased to announce that they will have the opportunity to promote their services to a wide and influential industry audience at BEX 2009.”
Carol Barker, the managing director of BEX, commented that the event provides a great launch pad to help companies showcase their inventions.
“These are challenging times,” she said, “but that is exactly why British companies should seek out new business opportunities and international business partners. Attending BEX could generate huge amounts of business for companies looking to expand or export to overseas markets.”
The BEX Innovation Competition is organised by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in conjunction with Building on Business. It is supported by the Construction Products Association and the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBE KTN).
